Jonathan, this sounds exactly like what I've been searching roughly a month for (not sure why this is the first I've seen of your site and soon-to-be beta, but ...). Anyhow, if there's still room on your beta tester list, I'd be absolutely thrilled to be included.

Thanks and keep fighting the good fight! :D

Johnathon, thank you thank you for tackling this project! I have been looking for just such a solution and would love to be involved in the beta test.

I'm just about to get started on a new project and was going to reluctantly use Zen-cart. In fact, that's how I ended up here because I was looking for a solution to use with Wordpress instead :)

Thanks again!

I'm not sure what I would use the slide show feature for... But if I were to use one, I would prefer it to be HTML/CSS/JavaScript instead of Flash. Just thought I'd give you my opinion, I think this will turn out to be a great product!

emma, in fact, I spent a good bit of time early in the development process to research many open source licenses. After digging and digging and weighing all the options, I'm planning on releasing the plugin under GPLv3. It's the most compatible with the spirit of the project.

MIT is another open source license. A lot of software is dual licensed under both GPL and MIT because MIT is GPL-compatible. For what I have envisioned for the plugin, I think the GPL is better suited.

Regarding documentation, I had thought along those lines about allowing the beta crew to participate in building the documentation. It may not be a "wiki" exactly, but it would allow for beta team contributions to the documentation.

Hope that answers it for you.

How about putting the documentation up as a wiki durign beta testing - that way we could all add / amend as we try and you'd have a 'tested' set of documentation to go with it?

With regards guillermo's comment, does this mean your plugin is not going to be open source? what is MIT?!

I've also been working on a similar project for quite some time, after noticing the same gap as you did. Mine, however, will be Open Source and MIT, but it's good to know the niche is filling with competitors.

@cheryl: Sorry, no, it's not quite done yet. It's getting there though! Check my other posts for progress updates. As a mini-update, I did get finished porting all of the shipping calculation code into a new modular architecture. That's important to you because it means I'll be able to develop new shipping calculations very easily (and by extension more quickly) for things like real-time shipping service estimates from service providers like UPS/FedEx/DHL.

@emma: No it's definitely not a prank post. I promise you'll be seeing screenshots soon enough. Now that the engineering is mostly complete, I'm working out some of the final core features. The largest of what is left to develop is the catalog and product views.

@emma & @dee: I would say that the system will just work with what I call "out-of-the-box" functionality in any theme. That's because nearly every component interface (the shopping cart, product displays, etc. will be able to be placed in existing pages/posts using shortcode tags [shortcode-example] right in the post/page editor. However, in order to get "power features", you'll have to do some theme customization using the shopp PHP tag. I do hope to have complete documentation to help even novice people do that. As far as potentially conflicting plugins, I have been very careful to engineer the plugin to be a good plugin citizen. That said, I don't have a tremendous amount of experience with how other plugin developers have developed their plugins. In terms of Shopp, though, I can attest to it playing nicely with others and following best practices so that it would be unlikely to be the cause of any problems. For tech geeks out there that might be reading and interested, the entire system is strongly object-oriented and encapsulated in it's own MVC-style design, so I have very little namespace pollution which will ensure it will cause little, if any problems. I hope if any issues do come up, that they will be discovered quickly and easily during beta.

How willyours stand with the them issue? Will you reccomend themes it does with with?
