Hi Jon, I am browsing through your blog hoping to find more descriptions of what you're planning.

I can tell you what I hope to see someday, somehow; A commerce package set up similarly to wordpress, where the structure has a lean and quick-loading interface to begin with. I'd like to see functionality added via plugins, so that I need not have so many unnecessary files on my server, so many unnecessary queries slowing down load time, so many unnecessary links in my backend.

My OSCommerce site is an ugly behemoth as far as I'm concerned. I've set up zen carts for people and had to babysit them forever, while they stared, bewildered, at the millions of extra options in the backend, that they will never need. The template system zencart uses kinda sucks. On the test shop I'm building from zencart, I have three boxes in use out of the twenty available. I'd like to put my choices in place, rather than remove them with my barely-minimal php skills.

I, and my friends, are solo craftspeople. We don't buy to sell, anda page devoted to manufacturers is useless. I've turned my manufacturers.php into a materials.php, but there are some things I can't change, like the product reviews-- which are useless when you sell unique items...

my observations are not meant to lambaste you for what you are already doing-- just comments!

@luc: I've only briefly begun reviewing the roadmap. I've had a client emergency that has further derailed some of my timeline plans. That said, I have other surprises in the works that I hope to reveal very soon.

I would have to agree with the others on going for product variations rather than tiered pricing. It seems to me the majority of people who would want something like tiered pricing are merchants who are reselling an item to distributors. As luc said, discount codes would usually do the trick for most merchants who might want different pricing. On the other hand, I suppose even the resellers could assign specific discount codes to their distributors, and thus you could still offer the benefit of the tiered pricing without the hassle.

Is it better to focus on product variations or tiered pricing? Or spend the enormous amount of development time necessary to design a complete solution?

My vote is for product variations

luc: I'll have something posted on the roadmap later today and that will give you the most detailed look. I'll also share a screenshot of the product editor and variant editor, though a single screenshot will hardly do it justice. But, that's a tease for you.

I think product variants, rather than tiered pricing would be more useful to those wanting an off the shelf plugin. Yes you're leaving out 10% of people's requirements, but are those 10% the type of people that want a WordPress plugin, or would they lean towards something like Magento anyway? So long as discount codes are somewhere in the roadmap (beta?), I'll be a happy bunny.

Any rough idea of a roadmap? Are we talking days, weeks, a month? I'm on the verge of having to use WP-commerce instead of my preferred option of shopp (and it's not even been seen yet!).

@brett: Thanks for the feedback. That's encouraging. This project has been a difficult balance of wanting to get it right from the start and trying to do too much. I definitely don't believe the final solution does too much, but it does add quite a lot of development time.

Thankfully, I'm halfway done with the implementation so i can get back to finalizing it for beta.
