inception
Introducing “insites”. A blog about my insights into the web industry and tech geekery. Essentially, what I live and breathe on a daily basis. So without further adieu, come on in and help me kick the tires…
I’ve been a holdout to the blogosphere for some time now. I always put it off with a litany of excuses: “I don’t have anything interesting to say”, or “Like I have the time”. Ok, so maybe not a litany of excuses, but they were big enough reasons for me not to start one.
Then I realized the the blogging format would provide a nice place to dump my thoughts and knowledge about the industry I practice (emphasis on practice). And if it helps others in the process, so much the better.
Name-storming
For the most part, my projects really don’t get anywhere until they have a name. So that’s where I started. I noticed the word ‘insights’ synced up nicely with my web work with Ingenesis Limited. The ‘in-’ prefix is a double entendre referring to the Internet and the ongoing, in-progress nature of the web medium. To make the name even more meaningful I changed the spelling (yes, it was intentional) to ‘insites’ to give reference to the web (ala websites). It seemed like such a ‘eureka’ moment that I knew I needed to make the project a reality.
Designing
Knowing that I would be creating a site to house my nuggets of web wisdom, I wanted a design that would convey abstract concepts like: depth of knowledge, creativity, fluid vs structured. What I started with was a masthead graphic – the one you see above. I really wrestled with whether to use it or not. Personally, I’m a fan of absolute simplicity and design minimalism. But, I felt I just needed to run with it, so I stuck with it. The various hues and shades of blue more or less match the Ingenesis color palette to give a tie in there. Beyond that, a basic grid with some accent greens and shades of grey in the typography create a transition from the organic complexity in the masthead to a simple, minimalist layout of the content. I’m quite pleased with the end result. We’ll just have to see what kind of longevity the design has.
I hope you enjoy the site and find it a helpful well of knowledge. I’ve big plans in store for it, so keep an eye out.
